Formed in 1990 through a conference discussing the plight of the southern cassowary, C4 (Community for Coastal and Cassowary Conservation) was created from a consortium of local community groups, local councils, government departments and other agencies such as CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization). Through five main working groups focusing on habitat, education, rural activities, a native nursery and wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, C4 aims to protect Mission Beach's natural values to ensure a healthy environment, community and economy.
